Safely Kept, a champion sprinter and Breeders’ Cup winner on the racetrack and later a multiple stakes producer, has been pensioned from broodmare duties. The 24-year-old mare, who resides at M. Lyn Burleson’s Burleson Farms near Midway, Ky., produced an Empire Maker filly May 17 for Richard Santulli’s Jayeff B Stables.
Safely Kept (Horatius--Safely Home, by Winning Hit) is the dam of 10 foals, including eight winners from nine starters. They include stakes winners Contrast (byUnbridled) and Peace Chant (by War Chant  ), both of whom were graded stakes-placed. Safely Kept is the granddam of stakes winner Welcome Home (by Dixieland Band).
As a racemare, Safely Kept won 24 races and placed in five others from 31 races and earned $2,194,206.  Remarkably, 22 of the wins came in stakes. She was trained most of the career by Alan Goldberg.
Safely Kept’s Breeders’ Cup Sprint (gr. I) triumph at Belmont Park in 1990 for Jayeff B and Barry Weisbord proved to be one for the ages. Battling with English invader Dayjur   in deep stretch, Safely Kept secured the victory after Dayjur tried to jump a shadow.
Safely Kept earned a sprint championship in 1989 when she won such New York added-money events as the Test Stakes (gr. I), the Prioress Stakes (gr. II), and the Genuine Risk Stakes (gr. II), and ran second in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint to Dancing Spree.

Mr. and Mrs. David Hayden are the breeders of Maryland-bred Safely Kept, who initially raced for the couple’s Dark Hollow Farm. Safely Kept captured eight Maryland championships.
