A dramatic late surge by Dark Hollow Farm’s homebred filly Plum to win the $75,000 Maryland Juvenile Filly Championship in the final jump made her a frontrunner for year-end state-bred championship honors for her division.
Ridden by Travis Dunkelberger, the daughter of Pure Prize prevailed by a head over More Than a Cruise in the 71⁄2-furlong test, the juvenile stakes co-feature on Laurel Park’s Saturday, Dec. 17 closing day card. Early leader Bluegrass Atatude, winner of the Maryland Million Lassie three starts back, finished 2 lengths behind More Than a Cruise, followed by Jazzy Idea, Two Hearts in One, Will n’ Pat and Lady Greeley.
The 1.60-1 favorite, Plum stopped the clock in 1:33.95 and paid $5.20. Now three for four lifetime for trainer Rodney Jenkins, Plum has made all of her starts at Laurel Park.
Jenkins, who won the 2010 running of the Juvenile Filly Championship with Love’s Reason, noted: “This filly has done everything we’ve asked her. It gives you confidence when breeders like their own horses and care about them.
“We haven’t seen the best of this filly,” continued Jenkins. “Wait until she goes a mile and an eighth or a mile and a quarter. I ran her long three times with her coming into the race so I didn’t have the speed, but I noticed Travis out broke them. She is a nice filly and is dead honest. She has such a natural stride. The rest of them looked like they were running their eye-balls out and she is galloping along. She has a good mind, good size and will grow into a better filly than she is now.”
Plum is the first stakes horse from three foals of racing age for the Not For Love mare Bamba. Also bred in Maryland by David and JoAnn Hayden’s Dark Hollow Farm, Bamba won three times during her career and earned $92,680 while counting a second in the What a Summer and thirds in the Politely, Smart Halo and Squan Song Stakes.
Bamba is also the dam of $128,350-earner U Boat Alley (Stormy Atlantic) and $65,060-earner Marianotojorge (by Lion Hearted). She produced a colt by Dance With Ravens in 2010, and has a yearling filly by Pure Prize, foaled in early May. Not in foal for 2012, Bamba is booked to Warrior’s Reward.
