Qualify passes test with flying colors!
Arrive Back On The Scene!
It didn’t take long for BREAD AND BUTTER to start bringing home the bacon, as the elegant juvenile daughter of Pure Prize out of the Not For Love mare Bamba whipped her 10 rivals in her debut at Churchill Downs on Saturday, Sept. 21.
Renowned racing executive Charles Cella was willing to spend $240,000 for the Dark Hollow Farm-bred filly at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Two-Year-Olds in Training sale this past May. And the imposing chestnut trained by Lynn Whiting was primed for her six and a half-furlong maiden special weight test. Sent off as the 2-1 favorite, she took off running at the start, opened up by daylight in the first quarter and was hand ridden to the wire by David Flores, winning with ears pricked by two and a half lengths.
A full sister to 2011 Maryland-bred champion 2-year-old filly PLUM, the scopey filly looks to only get better. She is the fifth foal out of stakes-placed Bamba, who was also bred by Dark Hollow Farm, and the mare’s fifth winner. In addition to Maryland Juvenile Filly Championship Stakes winner PLUM, Bamba is the dam of $148,130-earner U Boat Alley, $90,430-earner Marianotojorge, and current 3-year-old Raven’s Dance, a maiden winner first time out this year. Bamba produced a 2013 colt by Warrior’s Reward and is back in foal to Paddy O’Prado on a March 27 cover.
Shooting to the front and dictating the pace, Dark Hollow Farm, Arnold Davidov and David Schwaber's QUALIFY flew home the easiest of winners at Pimlico on Thursday, April 17. The 4-year-old son of Medaglia d'Oro and the A.P. Indy mare Open Flirt was eight and three-quarters lengths on top at the wire in the six-furlong maiden special weight. Making his first start since November, the bay colt conditioned by Graham Motion had been training smartly at his Fair Hill base and was dispatched the 1.70-1 favorite in the field of seven. Bred by his owners in partnership with Alice Wolf, QUALIFY is one of four (from five offspring) of Open Flirt to leave the auction ring for more than six figures. The mare's first foal, a daughter of Dixie Union named Nika, purchased by Dark Hollow, agent, while in utero in 2005, was a $500,000 juvenile, the fifth-highest price sold at the Ocala Breeder's Sales Company March sale in 2008. It took nearly a year, but ARRIVE is back! As talented at 3, the chestnut colt owned by the partnership of Dark Hollow Farm, Dorsey Brown, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Davidov and Mr. and Mrs. David Schwaber found his true calling on the turf last spring, turning in a sensational first time effort over the Pimlico lawn to just miss in allowance company after making up more than 15 lengths in the stretch. Then things were put on hold. ARRIVE exited that Pimlico race with a stress fracture and went to the sidelines. Allowed plenty of time to recover, with a turf campaign in 2014 as the target, the 4-year-old son of Street Boss was ready to go opening weekend at Pimlico. The result was sensational! Saving ground early in the 1-mile turf test, ARRIVE took the lead heading into the stretch and pulled away to a six and three-quarter-length victory. It was the Graham Motion trainee's second win, and fifth on-the-board finish, from eight career starts. ARRIVE is the second winner from three foals of racing age for his dam DREAM OUT LOUD, a daughter of Stravinsky and half-sister to champion MAGISTRETTI. DREAM OUT LOUD is also the dam of DREAM, a graded stakes-placed daughter of Malibu Moon who is now a member of the partnership's broodmare band. DREAM OUT LOUD was purchased in 2006 by the partnership of Dark Hollow Farm, Dorsey Brown, Arnold Davidov, David and Alena Schwaber and Fast Kitty Farm while carrying her first foal. The colt she delivered three months later, by Gone West, sold for $100,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. DREAM OUT LOUD's current yearling, a colt by Congrats, is slated to sell at this year's Keeneland September sale. Bred back to Bodemeister, DREAM OUT LOUD is due to foal this April and will be bred back to Paynter. DRESS UP is strutting her stuff this summer!
DRESS UP took her show on the road and kicked up her heels at Charles Town in July. Next came a trip to the Maryland State Fair in Timonium – and Dark Hollow Farm and Hillwood Stable’s homebred filly enjoyed the family atmosphere and fair festivities with a three and a quarter-length romp in the Friday, August 30 allowance feature against older runners. Teamed up once again with Travis Dunkelberger, the striking gray 3-year-old turned in a virtual replay of her six and a half-furlong allowance win at Charles Town on July 28. Leading at every call in both tests, the Rodney Jenkins trainee easily held off her competition and cruised home by daylight. With back-to-back wins, DRESS UP has increased her earnings to $65,740 from seven starts. Black-type is abundant in DRESS UP’s family. She is the third winner from as many foals for Dress Grey, a stakes-winning daughter of Lion Hearted. Her second dam, Chemise (by Secret Hello), produced four stakes horses from 10 starters – Dress Grey, Maryland Million Ladies S. winner Miss Lombardi, Maryland Juvenile Filly Championship S. winner Coquettish and five-time stakes-placed Hello Lover, and earner of $451,255 and twice graded stakes-placed. The latter two are also by Not For Love. The next event circled on DRESS UP’s social calendar is the Jameela Stakes for fillies and mares at Laurel Park on September 21. Already turning heads, she will look to make another grand entrance in her stakes debut. Juvenile filly BREAD AND BUTTER starts paying the bills!

Experiencing JOY with stakes win at Delaware Park!
Taking great pleasure in making her first start at Delaware Park, Dark Hollow Farm’s homebred filly JOY is now a stakes winner! The 3-year-old daughter of Pure Prize and Flatter mare SAFE JOURNEY bounced over the firm Delaware turf and pulled away to a one-length victory in the $50,000 Christiana Stakes on Wednesday, July 10.
The latest in a long line of stakes performers descending from Dark Hollow’s legendary foundation mare SAFELY HOME, JOY went off as the second choice in the field of six. She saved ground early under Matthew Rispoli, made a three-wide move rounding the far turn to join the leaders, was drifted wide but continued on strongly before shaking clear late. It was the second win in a row for the Graham Motion trained-chestnut, after defeating older runners in allowance company on the festive Preakness Day undercard at Pimlico in May. With her stakes score, JOY has earnings of $103,400 and been on the board in six of her 11 starts.
JOY represents the third-generation of SAFELY HOME’s special family. She is the first foal for her dam SAFE JOURNEY; her second dam is stakes-placed $114,923-earner Safe At the Plate, a half-sister to Hall of Famer SAFELY KEPT, the Eclipse Award-winning sprinter and Breeders’ Cup Sprint-G1-winning multimillionaire. Safe At the Plate is also the dam of graded stakes-placed runners Cognac Kisses ($178,094) and Kettle Won ($113,606) and $361,313-earner Glide Home.
