ELLANATION leads a holiday celebration!
David and JoAnn Hayden have always had faith in the family of Mystic Dance, a member of the marvelous Christiana Stables’ family descending from Obeah. Now rewarding the faith is ELLANATION, a 5-year-old granddaughter of Mystic Dance who recorded her first stakes win in Dark Hollow Farm's colors when getting up in time to take the $75,000 Jameela on Pimlico’s Independence Day holiday program. To get there has been quite the journey! Edie Meeny Miny Mo hits go in debut!
Edie Meeny Miny Mo was not playing around! Making her career debut at Pimlico on April 23, just about a week shy of her actual third birthday, the statuesque daughter of Upstart was eager to get to the front. The 9-10 favorite took charge in the first half mile of the six-furlong waiver maiden and dared her seven rivals to catch her as she cruised home a four and a quarter-length winner. The dark bay filly owned by Holly Hill Farm is conditioned by Miguel Vera and has been training over the Pimlico track since early March. Her first start was eagerly anticipated after the excitement of her last public appearance. Representing three generations of runners bred by Dark Hollow Farm, the daughter of stakes winner Plum made a quite a showing at last year's delayed Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-olds in training sale in late June. She zipped an eighth-mile in 10.0, equalling the fastest time at the under tack show of any horse in the sale, and sold as the second-highest priced filly when Sallusto/Albina, agents, went to $400,000. Cary Frommer prepared and consigned the filly, who went through the ring as a yearling for $120,000. HELLO HOT ROD has one gear--FAST!
HELLO HOT ROD, born and raised at Dark Hollow Farm, grew up galloping the same fields as his talented year-older half-sister Hello Beautiful. The handsome dark bay son of Maryland sire Mosler, bred by Ellen Charles’ Hillwood Stables, is now charting his own sensational course. In his first trip outside of Maryland he became a New York stakes winner when taking Aqueduct’s $100,000 Jimmy Winkfield Stakes for 3-year-olds in dramatic fashion on Jan. 31. In his stakes debut, HELLO HOT ROD was hustled away from the gate, set all the fractions in the seven-furlong test, and battled to the wire to win by a head. He never geared down and never gave in while recording his third victory in a row. In four starts, he has earned $113,941. BETCHA BY GOLLY she's a winner!
The 2-year-old filly Betcha by Golly was getting closer and closer to a win. On Sept. 26, in her third career start and her first at a distance greater than a mile, the daughter of Tapizar went right to the front over a sloppy Pimlico track and stayed there, sweeping home by two and three-quarter lengths for owners Skeedattle Associates and trainer Graham Motion. Betcha by Golly has always looked special. Skeedattle Associates’ Willy White, who with partners Bob Orndorff and Lou Rehak has operated a highly-successful Maryland-based racing stable for decades, went to $150,000 to take her home from the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearling sale – making her the highest-priced filly in the sale. She not only boasts great looks, but a pedigree to match. White told the Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred after the sale: “If we can get a Maryland-bred that’s put together, balanced like that, with that kind of family, with the kind of opportunity we have to race in Maryland, you can’t beat it.” In her short career, Betcha by Golly has earned $44,369. PROJECT WHISKEY shows fighting spirit with first graded win!
Proving the word quit is not in her vocabulary, Project Whiskey battled down the Delaware Park stretch on the 4th of July and won the Grade 3 Delaware Oaks in her first graded stakes start! The daughter of Tapizar out of the Dark Hollow Farm-bred Over the Moon (by Malibu Moon) is now a two-time stakes winner, having shown the same grit and determination when taking the Parx Juvenile Fillies Stakes at 2. Trained by Butch Reid, Project Whiskey was purchased by Charles J. Zacney at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Eastern Fall Yearling sale for $35,000 and races for Cash is King LLC and LC Racing. In seven starts, she has won three times, been on the board in five, and has earnings of $262,580. A daughter of Plum, at $400,000, is top priced Maryland-bred filly at Fasig-Tipton Midlantic June sale
The 2-year-olds out of Plum sure are sweet! Her Upstart filly turned heads at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic juvenile sale, which was moved from its traditional May date to June. After zipping an eighth-mile in 10 seconds flat at the Under Tack Show, equaling the fastest time at the distance, the dark bay filly walked into the ring and drew a final bid of $400,000 from Sallusto/Albina, Agents. Cary Frommer prepared and consigned the filly, who went through the ring as a yearling for $120,000. Two years earlier, Plum’s Bodemeister colt went through the May sale and sold for $300,000. Plum also was a looker at 2 while making her mark on the track. The daughter of Pure Prize was named Maryland-bred champion 2-year-old filly of 2011 after capturing three straight races, including the Maryland Juvenile Filly Championship Stakes. Stakes-placed at 3 and a winner of four races with earnings of $128,440, Plum retired to the Dark Hollow Farm broodmare band to join her dam, homebred multiple stakes-placed Bamba (by Not For Love). |
